Teaching your children to brush their teeth is no easy job, but it’s critical for setting them up for a lifetime of good oral health. Here’s a little professional advice, especially for all of you first time parents.
If your child is old enough, take them toothbrush shopping. Putting a little personality into an otherwise mundane task like brushing can help encourage them, even get them excited. Make sure whatever brush they choose is soft bristled and sized appropriately for their age group.
If your child has developed their first set of teeth, it’s time to start the teaching process. Brush his or her teeth at least two times a day, paying close attention to the gums. Your goal here is to familiarize your child with the brushing process and make them comfortable. Establish a routine early.
Don’t be afraid of teething, applying pressure to the gums actually relieves some of the pain. It’s okay for your child to chew or clamp down on the brush as they’re learning. Demonstrate the proper brushing technique, there’s a good chance your child will revel in the opportunity to mimic you. It can actually be quite fun!
How much do you remember about the perfect brushing techniques? Here’s a little refresher course: hold the brush at a 45 degree angle and brush in circular motions, making sure to travel up to the gums. You should brush your teeth for a minimum of two minutes, but you’ll need to very gradually work your child up to this requirement.
Maintaining your child’s oral health extends well beyond toothbrushes and toothpaste. Provide them with healthy snacks low in sugar throughout the day. If they have a palette for it, raw veggies and apples can actually help cleanse teeth.
Teach your kids the importance of brushing their teeth as soon as possible!
