Fun Weekend Getaways in and around Arizona

lake-powell-10247-1680x1050_8140_46411-978x426As the weather gets warmer in the valley, more and more people think about where to go to escape the heat.  Luckily, we live very close to many great weekend spots within a few hours’ drive or a quick flight.  Here are some of our favorite places to get away from it all, either in or close to Arizona:

Bordered by sandstone rocks, Lake Powell is a boater’s paradise.  Nestled inside Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, which covers hundreds of miles in Arizona and Utah, the lake has hundreds of canyons and beaches reachable only by boat.  Rent a kayak for a few hours or a houseboat for a week.

At an altitude of 7,000 feet, Flagstaff is often called “the City of Seven Wonders.”  Near the San Francisco Peaks, Flagstaff is home to Northern Arizona University and is a hiker’s paradise.  It’s also close to the Grand Canyon, Oak Creek and Arizona Snowbowl.  While you’re there, check out the Monte Vista hotel and several local breweries and watering holes.

Nearly all visitors see the Grand Canyon from the South Rim, thanks to its accessibility and amenities.  The views there are overwhelming, but if you want a different experience, head to the North Rim.  With an elevation that’s more than 1,000 feet higher, the North Rim is more remote, more forested and far less crowded.

For a more romantic getaway, the Grand Canyon Caverns Inn has both romance and adventure.  The inn sits at the entrance of the Grand Canyon Caverns, the largest dry caverns in the United States.

The red rocks surrounding Sedona are surreal and inspirational.  In the heart of Oak Creek canyon, Native Americans believed that the area around Sedona had mystical powers.  In present times, Sedona has been a destination for New Age followers who find healing energy among the red rocks.  If you drive a little West from Sedona, you’ll find the revitalized mining town of Jerome, which is known for its art and ghost stories.  With plenty of shops and activities, Jerome has something for all ages.  In the cooler regions south of Sedona, Arizona wine makers have found an ideal climate for planting grapes.  While in the area, head to Dos Cabezas WineWorks in Sonoita or Page Springs in Cornville, AZ.

Craving a little time on the beach?  Head to San Diego for a SoCal adventure.  Mission beach is the epitome of Southern California beaches.  Coronado island is also a favorite.
